CAMPSITE # 10 - Berry Good, Berry Nice

After getting the “hot tip” from a Sydney local en route to Kiama, we were informed that the “Little Blowhole” where very little tourists go, actually blew the big hole out of the water.. mind the pun J
And the Little blowhole was rather impressive, spraying up to 30metres high while we were there. Apparently, a basalt dyke, which is softer than the surrounding rock, erodes away quickly therefore forming a fissure-like hole in the rock. As the wave washes in, water is trapped in the chamber. When the next wave comes in, pressure builds so high that water blasts through the hole. I felt sorry for the beautiful mansions with full frontal ocean views less than 100metres from the blowhole, their balconies were just covered in sea salt & were rusting away but hey.. the blowhole was there long before the houses were.

We had planned to venture to Gerringong to stay at a beachside caravan park. The town wasn’t overly nice, pretty plain really. When we got to the Caravan park, the woman there was so rude and standoff ish that we decided we’d prefer to have a drive thru first to decide if we wanted to stay the night. Clearly, her attitude had rubbed off on the rest of the camp and we quickly made our escape from plain old Gerringong.

The joy of living our lifestyle is that you can just jump in the car and keep on driving until you actually find a town where the people are polite and actually a joy to speak to. Thank goodness for the let down at Gerringong, otherwise, we never would have found our favourite town to date – Berry. A quaint, charming town with a touch of magic. We both decided we could very easily put the brakes on the trip and just setup in Berry ... but lucky for us (and Berry) Australia was still calling.

The shops in Berry are lovely. The people are talkative & friendly. The food & coffee smelt amazing LOL and the pub... well we didn’t even need to go inside to know that it was already our favourite (didn’t fit into the budget). Berry is an absolute must for those travelling anywhere near Sydney. I was so blown away that this gorgeous quirky little town has burnt itself into my memory bank for years to come.

The campsite, or should I say showground with camping facilities, wasn’t anything over the top. It was just neat & tidy filled with very friendly fellow campers. As we arrived on a Saturday, we quickly learnt that there was a horse jamboree on at the showgrounds the following day as a McGrath foundation fundraising event.
We parked up next to another Troopcarrier and made friends with the german couple – Michael & Tanya. Michael & Tanya were on their second trip around Oz and were 11months into their trip. They were due to fly home in 2 weeks time and were busy trying to sell their Troopie. Of course, conversations had to be had and what better way for them to be had than over a few too many drinkie poos. It was great to have met Michael & Tanya and for them to give us some of their tricks of the trade, what to do’s and not to do’s.

Vicki, the onsite manager of the grounds was an avid Crafty. She’s inspired me for my crafty creations while we’re on our trip. I have begun making some 100% hemp twine friendship bands aka Travellers bands that we can hopefully sell to backpackers along the way. Another thing I’ve realised there’s a huge market for our here is decent postcards!! God damn, how hard is it to make a decent postcard?!!?!! Vicki said she and her husband were on the road for two years and paid for the fuel entirely by selling greeting cards along the way for $2 a pop... that’s one hell of a lot of greeting cards but hey.. certainly worth a try!!
