CAMPSITE # 136 - Springvale Homestead, Katherine NT

It's not difficult to understand why so many southerners flee to the Northern Territory during winter... What Winter? I'm still in singlet and shorts naively flying the flag for summer, it wasn't until I saw a glimpse of a morning television show doing a segment on the snowfall levels at Perisher that it really twigged.  It's difficult to imagine that temps can have such a huge variance in the same country. So, how different are the Northern Tropics of Australia to the southern end during winter?

While the weather in our town of Katherine NT was a sunny and clear top of 29, snow showers were developing in Perisher Valley NSW with a predicted low of -7 degrees Celsius.

While we're busy eyeing off all of the caravan parks with pools to cool us down,  residents just west of my hometown in Brisbane were preparing for their coldest morning in three years as temperatures were set to plummet to minus 5 degrees.

On New Years Eve 2010, we endured our hottest day on record on the trip at a gruelling 42 degrees but now, the famous surf beach of Bells Beach has recorded water temperatures of 10 - 12 degrees.

Up here, there is no such thing as Summer, Autumn, Winter & Spring, there are just two seasons that are very appropriately named the Wet Season & the Dry Season. Without a doubt the best time to travel around Darwin is during the Dry Season which runs from May through to September. Having such a small window to travel across this countryside means that you share the road and campsites with 50 billion other travellers.

Even though we may be missing out on the cold, wet miserable weather down south, I suppose the two of us will tough out the optimum temperatures but never fear, if it does get even remotely unpleasant we'll be sure to splash our way into the closest swimming pool, with beer in hand of course.

Site : Springvale Homestead, Katherine NT
Rating : 7 / 20
Facilities : Stumbled across it on our way to the Big4 to forkout out $31 for an unpowered site. Found this one for $20 per night. In need of a bit of TLC but nice shady surroundings. Nothing flash but does the job. Natural hot springs piped into the swimming pool.
