CAMPSITE # 94 - What next?

That was it, we had ticked the boxes -
  • Uluru. Tick.
  • Kings Canyon. Tick.
  • Gosses Bluff. Tick.
  • Alice Springs. Tick.
But where to now? We had originally planned to do a circular route from Alice Springs over the top of the Simpson Desert on the Plenty Highway and then down to Birdsville and along the northern end of the Birdsville Track to Mungerannie. But thanks to the rain, the northern end of the Birdsville Track was closed as it was like an inland ocean.

We dreaded the thought of having to back track all of the way down to Port Augusta and had been living in hope for the days prior that the Oodnadatta Track would reopen in time.

Thankfully we had our fingers and toes crossed, and we had only discovered 24 hours prior to that the Oodnadatta track had officially reopened. Hip Hip Horah!! We made it by the skin of our teeth. Scrap backtracking all of the way down to Port Augusta along the road we had travelled just one week beforehand, we only had to backpedal 250kms until the turn off to the Oodnadatta Track at Marla.

First things first though, we needed to revitalise ourselves and stock up with H20 and enjoy those final little creature comforts while they were still available and until we headed out to the middle of nowhere. Think I'm exaggerating??

Site : Erldunda Caravan Park
Rating : 7 / 20

Facilities : Free BBQ and showers, good undercover shelter with power. A very inviting firepit. The park itself is nothing special though.

Love that sign! But we weren't brave enough to stay at Erldunda - we were put off by the giant echidna in a cage!! Is it still there??

We were fortunate enough to not stumble across the monstrosity until we were driving out of camp ;)
